Wording on back of card...

This prehistoric looking lizard is found on around 35 islands.
Seven of the islands are in the Cook Strait around New Zealand.

The Tuatara has a spiked back and neck, their name being derived from this feature.
In the Māori language Tuatara means peaks on the back.

Another interesting feature is a tiny third eye on top of his head, (retina, lens and nerve endings) which gets covered by scales after a few months.

These guys are cannibals (they eat their own species).

Tuataras are not lizards, nor dinosaurs, as some speculate, but rather the remains of a once widespread reptilian group.

There are still about 45,500 of them around today.
